In writing this book I have been fortunate to find myself in the company of scholars of whose profound knowledge and sincere interest I have been - and still am - the constant beneficiary. Among my teachers at the theological faculty of the University of Copenhagen I owe particularly great debts of gratitude to Lecturer, cand. theol., Jørgen Pedersen who, in addition to originally initiating me into medieval theology, read and commented on the book in its various stages of progress; and to Professor, dr. theol., Leif Grane who spent time on reading the book and was the motive power behind its publication.
